Rebecca Welcomes Rollout of New On Demand Bus Service

One of the most common concerns I hear from residents - particularly older residents or those living in our more rural villages - is the challenges they face accessing reliable public transport. Whether it’s getting to a hospital appointment, picking up groceries, or visiting family, the lack of bus routes and infrequent services on the routes we do have, can make everyday journeys difficult or even impossible without a car.

This is why I’m so pleased to welcome the launch of the Surrey Connect Digital Demand Responsive Transport (DDRT) bus service - which went live on 20th October.

This is a modern, flexible and affordable transport option designed specifically for areas like ours, where conventional bus services don’t always meet local needs. Here’s how it works: you book a minibus journey on-demand - either via an app, the Surrey Connect website or over the phone. You can book a ride up to seven days in advance, or as little as 30 minutes before your trip, making it much more convenient than trying to match your day to a fixed timetable.

The service operates Monday to Friday (7am to 7pm) and Saturdays (8am to 6pm). Best of all, fares start from as little as £2, with full pricing and booking instructions available at the Surrey Connect website.

These buses will take you anywhere within the defined Reigate area (which is almost a perfect overlap with the area covered by Reigate & Banstead Borough Council) whether that’s a hospital, train station, or your local supermarket. And because the service uses new software to cleverly groups customer demands together into logical routes, you will be able to expect an efficient journey without excessive stops or diversions.

I know that services like this are especially valuable for residents who don’t drive or who live further from rail and bus links. It is clear from conversations I have had that for some, this will be a real lifeline. It is also a good example of how a well-run and engaged local authority can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Surrey County Council is to be commended for listening to concerns and then investing in practical, local solutions.

So, if you’ve been frustrated by a lack of bus options or if you’re simply looking for a more flexible way to get around without relying on a car, I would strongly encourage you to give Surrey Connect a try. With a quick download or phone call, it’s now possible to access a safe, affordable and environmentally friendly transport option running to your schedule - not the other way around.

I’ll be keeping a close eye on how the new service is received and will continue pushing for improvements wherever they’re needed. In the meantime, I’d love to hear your feedback if you do try it!
