Rebecca Paul, Member of Parliament for Reigate, has welcomed the Prime Minister’s commitment that the Supreme Court ruling on the meaning of “sex” must be implemented in full and at all levels, following her question at Prime Minister’s Questions today.
At Prime Minister’s Questions, Rebecca Paul MP said:
“I would like to ask the Prime Minister for his help. It’s been over 6 months since the Supreme Court ruling on the meaning of ‘sex’, yet public institutions are still knowingly and intentionally breaching the law.
“HMP Downview, a women’s prison in my constituency, has 5 biological males in it. And if that wasn’t bad enough, those males are mixing with the women in the daytime without adequate supervision.
“Will the Prime Minister ensure biological males are moved out of women’s prisons immediately?”
The Prime Minister responded:
“The Supreme Court ruling must be implemented in full and at all levels. She's absolutely right about that.
“She's raised these examples with me. I will make sure they are looked into and make sure she gets a proper reply in relation to the particular examples.”
Following the exchange, Rebecca Paul MP said:
“I welcome the Prime Minister’s unequivocal statement that the Supreme Court ruling must be implemented in full.
“That ruling made clear that ‘sex’ in law means biological sex and yet, in my constituency, biological males remain in a women’s prison, mixing with female inmates in the daytime.
“The Prime Minister’s commitment today is an important step forward. I will be holding the Government to that promise and continue pressing for immediate action to remove biological males from women’s prisons.”
